Clinical practice at UFP’s Pedagogical Clinic of Psychology as a research context in psychotherapy

Literature has emphasized the importance of clinical practice being systematically evaluated in order to achieve a broad understanding of the complex mechanisms of therapeutic transformation. As emphasized by the Portuguese Ministry of Health, the clinical process of a client, in addition to “enabling a more efficient delivery of health care through the timely provision of prior information necessary to support (therapeutic) decision-making”, has yet another goal: to allow “the clinical ersearch (identification and discovery of information that may be used in the treatment of other patients) and the management of health services (through the analysis and quantification of acts performed, inherent costs and results obtained) “(, 2010). This is precisely the context in which this line of research is inserted, whose purpose is to extract useful knowledge regarding psychological evaluation and intervention, based on the clinical data of clients who perform psychological counseling at University Fernando Pessoa’s Pedagogical Clinic of Psychology (CPP).

Current projects:

  1. Emotional problems (anxiety and depression) in adults: sociodemographic and clinical characteristics
    General goal: to analyze and characterize, from a sociodemographic and clinical point of view, adult clients with emotional disturbance in psychological counseling at CPP.
  2. Drop-out in psychotherapy: treatment, patient and therapist variables
    General goal: to analyze and characterize, from a socio-demographic and clinical point of view, adult clients who dropped out early the psychological counseling at CPP.
  3. Positive group psychotherapy: a pilot study in clinical and non-clinical populations
    General goal: to evaluate the effectiveness of a group intervention program in promoting well-being and personal development among clinical and non-clinical adult populations.
  4. Risk factors and parental protection in the demonstration of internalization and externalization problems in children and teenagers
    Overall objective: to analyze and study the relationship between risk factors and parental protection factors in the manifestation of internalization and externalization problems among clients from 6 to 18 years of age in psychological counseling at CPP.
